My Financial (major) Duty

While I was in undergrad, my major was Accounting. I chose this as my major, because in high school, I took an Intro. to Accounting class, and found it to be my passion. As I reflected on my life today, I even noticed that I write more of numbers then letters, (after analyzing my handwriting).

In the past, I had participating in the Stock Market, and purchased a couple of stocks with a friend, and was able to make a nice profit. After some odd circumstances, we had to sell our shares at a loss, resulting in a little more then a $1,000 loss. Some may think that a $1,000 is not a lot of money, but to me, losing any amount of money grater then $50 is a heartache for me.

This past month of December, I decided to purchase some more shares, this time on my own. The first, metal company; the second in an energy company. Currently I am in the red, so much for diversification. (side note: I don't like the theory of diversification, I feel it just decreases the amount of loss, but you still lose.)

To summarize things up, it took me a while to make such an independent move towards adulthood. I am very proud of myself for taking on this experience by myself. Although it happen at the very last moment of 2014, I feel that purchasing stocks on my own, is one of the top five most proudest moments of 2014. I also felt that since I went to school for accounting and finance, I should put my education to practice.

Hopefully I will keep you guys updated about my portfolio and maybe bring some financial advice/enlightenment for you.

New Christmas Mixer

This Christmas, I received my first KitchenAid Mixer, and I was super excited to use this bad boy. I have always been eyeing for one, but could never justify the purchase. I love baking, but often find myself ruining a simple batch of cookies. Whenever I am board, I will look up different types of recipes on Pinterest.
( http://www.pinterest.com/gwennguyen/yum/ ) Since receiving this new mixer, I have tired this new Brookies, half brownie and half chocolate chip cookie, recipe. I only made the brownie cookie batter, because I couldn't deal with messing up another chocolate chip cookie recipe, it would be too soon.

Link for the recipe: http://www.melskitchencafe.com/brookies/

I had to prop my mixer on a chair because
I ran out of room in the kitchen.

Some things that I changed from the recipe:
  • I only used one egg
  • Didn't use 1/2 cup unsweetened natural cocoa powder, instead used hot chocolate mix and some Hershey chocolate syrup
  • Only used half a teaspoon of baking soda
The sugar and butter

The final product

I used a small ice cream scoop to make small dough balls and I kept the dough in the refrigerator in between batches. The cookies flattened out into a beautiful (perfect) circle! Some things I would change, maybe less sugar, because all of the sugar did not dissolve away. Possibly more flour to make it a little thicker and chewier? Also the hot chocolate mix was a great substitute if you don't have any cocoa powered on hand.

2nd recipe
Waffle Doughnuts (http://deliciouslyyum.com/real-deal-waffle-donuts/)
Great Christmas morning treat, you can also make a waffle buffet with different fixings like chocolate, fruit, or sprinkles.

Some things I changed:

  • substituted about 2 teaspoons of white sugar for brown sugar
  • check the consistency of the batter, I had to add an extra spoonful of flour
Other than that, the waffles where wonderful and no need for extra syrup.

Sorry I didn't have any pictures, it was a last minute addition to the post.

App Review: Viggle & M-GO

I have been using the Viggle app for a couple of years now. The purpose of the app, is to reward you for watching tv, and you collect points based of the amount of time that you watch a certain program. The app offers a wide range of rewards, from sweepstakes to deals to gift cards. When I started using the app, I really liked the variety of gift card choices they offered. I would redeem my points for Starbucks, Groupon, and Sephora gift cards. But as time passed, the gift card choices where poor and scarce.

I then noticed that Viggle started offering movies, tv shows and music as rewards. So this past weekend, I was wanting to watch a new movie, and decided to trade in my points for The Maze Runner. When you use your points, the media content is connected with the M-GO app. Over all I was quite pleased with my experience of the transition.

I was going to stream the movie from my computer, a Mac. I didn't want to download another program to my computer so I decided to download the app to my Android. It was pretty easy and the buffering was pretty spot on. Now you may be thinking, how painful it is to watch a move on your cell phone. I was able to stream the app with my Google Chromecast device and it was so seamless.

I had purchased my Chromecast around the Thanksgiving holiday on a whim. I had seen it on the side of a shelf all lonely and misplaced. It was on sale for $25 dollars and I decided to try it out. I can say, this is one of the top purchase of 2014, hands down. This device allows you to stream almost anything to your tv.

In conclusion, all items mentioned above are absolutely amazing. I am still so shocked and surprised how easy it is to purchase a movie and have it available within seconds to view. I do wish that the movie could have been linked with other services, such as Amazon or VUDU. That way I can keep up with less programs, user names and passwords. I was born in 1988, and I remember the struggles of life before the Internet and high tech technology. Every day the world of technology just amazes me and I can only wonder with life for my children will be like.

As 2014 comes to an end, what better way to summarize it then with some music mash-ups!

This little gem, created by DJ Earworm, has been featured on Buzzfeed. DJ Earworm, also know as Jordan Roseman, currently resides as a San Francisco DJ. He crates annual "United States of Pop" mash-up, which features the top 25 Billboard hits. This year, after listening to this amazing creation, it has inspired me...stay tune to see what I will post in the upcoming weeks.

Mini Review: Food and Fashion

Food
On my recent trip to Target, I found some Blue Diamon Amonds: Salted Caramel. I was a little hesitant at first, but decided to give them a try. At fist, I thought they would be sweet yet salty, but instead they brought more of a sweet flavor. You can really taste the caramel flavor, its a perfect combination of something crunchy and not over the top with caramel sweetness. As an added bonus almonds are very healthy, and they are a great snack substitute compared to potato chips.

Fashion
My most recent online shopping haul is from Forever21. Sometimes I feel like I am to old to shop at Forever21, but I can't help it. They have some really cute and fashion point clothing with reasonable pricing... most of the time. I was in search of some crop tops, thanks to Miss Taylor Swift herself. It took me some time to find some appropriate clothing crop top options. I was able to find 3 different tops, some pleather leggings similar to my Express ones and something out of the norm for me.... an ear cuff. In aadditionto all my great finds, I also had a 20% off coupon! Who doesn't love a bargain?

Lace & Mesh Crop Top (neon coral & champagne)

Glitter Knit Crop Top

Faux Leather Paneled Pants

Rhinestone Earcuff & Stud Set

Down side, the pants didn't fit me right. They where a little to tight on the calf and a tad to long. Hopefully the fit my sister better. As for the 2 crop tops, I will have to look in my closet for some high wasted skirts, because I didn't realize how short they would be.

GoPro Hero 4

I just realized that I forgot to post about my GoPro Hero 4!

HERO4 Silver

I recently purchased mine from Best Buy. (NOT A SPONSORED POST...I wish)
I thought it would take a week to be delivered, but instead I was greatly surprised when it came four days later. Thanks Best Buy. Because I had already owned the GoPro Hero 3, and generously gave it to my cousin, it was a no brainer to get the new one. However, after some consideration, I started to doubt if I should buy a new one or to repurchase an old one. The reasons behind it was mainly due to the new screen.

With the addition of a new screen, it meant more parts to be broken. Once I got the product, I didn't even use the screen. I made it my first objective to have the screen off at all times. I really liked the idea of self capturing and not knowing what you would playback. Although the 3 and 4 are the exact same size, for some reason, I feel like the 4's are bigger. I also purchased a monopod/tripod mount from Ebay (for 88 cents!), so I would be able to mount it to my selfie stick.

*Side note* I am a BestBuy rewards member, when I went to checkout and used a gift card, I was not rewarded points for my entire purchase. Just for the amount minus the gift card; which I thought was very odd, considering I did the same thing at Ulta and they rewarded me all my points.

I am super excited to use my GoPro next month when I set sail on my first Carnival cruise to Progreso and Cozumel, Mexico. For my first GoPro, I purchased an additional case. The reason being, I hated popping on and off the backing to switch from waterproof to non. I knew after constant switching, I would end up breaking the thing. As of yet, I haven't purchased an additional case yet. I am hoping to find one for a great price, or just to deal with the lower sound quality due to the waterproof case.

App Highlight: HPL Mobile

Disclaimer: Houston based app

Yep, HPL... as in, Houston Public Library. If your anything like me, the last time we where in a library was in college and the last time you actually borrowed a book would be in your high school years.

I recently stumbled across this app when I saw a HPL booth. They are currently going thought a change in their system and are updating all of their library cards, and I believe they are being sponsored by HEB.
When I was younger, I would usually go to the library for audio books, cds and dvd. But now you don't have to leave your house to borrow audio books. Similar to other audio book apps in the market, the HPL app allows you to borrow digital copies of books and audio books right to your little devices, for free! (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bredir.boopsie.hpltx&hl=en)

I absolutely love listing to audio books, it is definitely a lot better (for me) than finding time to read.
I am currently listening to Janet Evanovich & Dorien Kelly : Love in a Nutshell. It was just a random choice, but I usually listen to the audio book while working out, usually running or on my car rides to and from work. The best part is, since you are paying attention to the story line, you forget that you have been running for 30 mins. or sitting in traffic.

DWTS Season 19

Isn't it crazy, that Dancing With The Stars has been on for 19 seasons! I remember in the beginning, I would always watch; then I drifted off somewhere in the middle. However, the past couple of years, I have made sure to DVR each episode and voted for my favorite dancers!

It is always so exciting to see which celebrity will be joining the show, and which celebrity will be matched with the pros. This year, in my opinion, there where not a lot of known celebrity. But there are a couple of people that are already my favorites, see if you can figure them out.

Alfonso Ribeiro and Witney Carson

“The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air?; I just love her

Sadie Robertson and Mark Ballas

a fan on "Duck Dynasty", and she is so cute very "girl next door"; kinda hoping she would be matched with Derek or Val

Michael Waltrip and Emma Slater

;loved Emma after seeing her with Bill

Janel Parrish and Val Chmerkovskiy
Big fan of PLL; I think this is a great pair
Lolo Jones and Keo Motsepe

Tommy Chong and Peta Murgatroyd

Bethany Mota and Derek Hough

Tavis Smiley and Sharna Burgess

Lea Thompson and Artem Chigvintsev
I don't remember her in "Back to the Future", I was probably a little young, but I do remember her in "Switched at Birth"

Resturant Review: The Capital Grille

The first time I ate at The Capital Grille, I was visiting a friend in Dallas. The setting of the restaurant was very high scale yet lacking in the lighting department. The room was spacious and friendly, and had a very old school high society feel. So when I heard they where opening one near me, I was excited to try it during Houston Restaurant Week.

Both times I ordered a cup of clam chowder, an 8 oz. filet mignon, followed by a key lime pie. The meal also came with mashed potatoes and green beans. However, the second time, I added a extra set of shrimp. The food was great. The clam chowder tasted true to Boston roots. The steak was juicy yet filling, the mashed potatoes where the perfect amount of fluffy; I am not a large vegetable fan, so I will leave that out. The dessert was delicious! The key lime pie was a little citrus but you just couldn't stop going back for more.

Some would say, that restaurant week portions are small. However, I felt that the portions where just the perfect size.

Service for my first visit was a little spotty. However, service for my second visit was outstanding! The setting of the restaurant is a little more brighter, however it is significantly smaller then the Dallas location.

Life Update

As you can see from this blog, I don't post very often. I usually post things randomly, to later take it down. This time, I am going to try to post more often about things that interest me. Starting with, today is the first day back to school; and for me, I am not to excited about it. This semester I am only taking one class, once a week for 10 weeks (really 9, due to Labor Day)

That's all I really have time for right now, till next time :)

GoPro: Hero3

I recently bought my GoPro Hero 3 at Target, because they where having a $25 gift card sale.
This little camera is so powerful, it can take videos and pictures with live stream capabilities; it is also such an amazing gadget, because it can also be used underwater! So far I have bought an extra housing case, and a monopod, also known as a selfie stick. Both items where bought from Amazon for less than $20 each.
The only bad thing about the original housing case that came with the GoPro, was its odd latching mechanism; so if you do decide to purchase one, remember to be careful opening and closing the case. I also had a couple of problems with the camera randomly freezing on me, I believe it was more due to super low battery power and high live streaming circumstances.

Here is a sample of a picture and video that I personally took:
